The pros and cons of shared custody

It isn’t uncommon for North Dakota parents to share custody of their children after a divorce or separation. Although children generally benefit from having both parents in their lives, shared custody orders aren’t always appropriate. Take a closer look at the pros and cons of such an arrangement.

Children may feel as if their needs don’t matter

In many cases, a minor will naturally seek out one parent over the over for emotional support and guidance. However, in a shared custody situation, a young person may not seek what he or she needs to get through a chaotic period in his or her life. There is a good chance that your son or daughter will feel as if your needs are more important than his or her own. As a parent, it is important that you provide your child with love and assurance as opposed to seeking those things from your son or daughter.

The relationship between a parent and child shouldn’t be broken

Research has shown that children can thrive after a divorce if they maintain healthy relationships with their parents. This is generally true even if the parents themselves don’t have a strong relationship. Ultimately, shared custody orders can help to ensure that both parents get to play a significant role in raising their children.

An attorney may be able to help convince a judge that you are capable of being your child’s primary caregiver. During a child custody hearing, a legal professional may introduce written statements from teachers, doctors or other adults who vouch for your character. These individuals might also be allowed to testify in court during a hearing.
